OWAD Environment provides the following services:

  • Koala studies
Koala studies are tailored to your project's specific needs and objectives, and to your budget and time constraints. They can range anywhere from a rapid assessment of the site with our detection dogs for rapid confirmation of Koala presence/absence only, to more comprehensive studies including population analysis (genetic diversity, population structure, health status, gene flow etc.) via Koala scat analysis results provided by our partner WildDNA. See FAQs about our detection dogs or FAQs about Koala scat analysis for further details.
  • Underground Orchid surveys
In late 2019 OWAD added a species of Underground Orchid (Rhizanthella spp.) as a target to our detection dogs. Field trials conducted in January 2020 confirmed that this species was successfully added (see Sample of media coverage for more information). OWAD is currently adding a second Underground Orchid (Rhizanthella slateri) to our dogs, with field trials scheduled in winter/spring 2020 to confirm its successful addition.
  • Quoll surveys
Our dogs target the scats of three species of Quoll: Eastern Quoll, Northern Quoll and Spotted-tailed Quoll (also known as Tiger Quoll) indiscriminately. Analysis of Quoll scat content can be organised upon request.
  • Other threatened species surveys
For any other threatened flora/fauna species, do not hesitate to contact us. We can discuss the feasibility of adding this species to our dogs; or direct you to colleagues who may have a dog already trained (or ready to be trained) on the species in question.
  • Training and education workshops
We offer workshops to train professional or amateur ecologists on Koala scat identification and on the non-invasive Koala genetic sampling procedures and protocols. This training is suitable for consulting ecologists, government officers, community groups and NGOs. Each workshop is tailored in length and in content to the particular needs of each group. E.g. if participants need training on Koala scat identification to ensure you can confidently differentiate Koala from Possum scats, this will be included in the training. This workshop is available upon request, contact us for more information. Other types of educational workshops are available upon request; do not hesitate to contact us with your specific needs.
  • Koala Expert Witness services
We are experienced and available to provide specialist Ecology Expert Witness services for legal matters. We have both acted as Expert Witness ourselves, and assisted the appointed Joint Experts. In 2016, our dog Taz created a landmark in Australia's legal system by being the first conservation dog whose evidence was accepted in an Australian Court case.
  • Conferences and events
We are available to speak and deliver presentations at conferences and a range of events. Contact us with your specific needs.

Need a service not listed above? Contact us to discuss your specific needs. We may have the expertise required, and if we don't we will be happy to point you in the right direction.

Note: all mapping products included in our reports are done using ArcGIS mapping software.
